As more hotels are working to boost biodiversity and support large-scale conservation efforts, nature-based tourism is rising. When planning a trip or stay, look for hotels doing their part to reduce waste and help the environment. Some hotels boast about their anaerobic digesters, which convert solid waste into liquids, or their industrial composters, which produce biogas or biofertilizer. Others follow a proper circular-economy system, alchemizing metals, bottles, and coconut husks into valuable items.

There is a growing trend among hotels to measure and reduce their carbon footprints. Many hotels are signed up for the Science Based Targets Initiative and introducing triple-glazing to minimize energy waste.

To find the most ethical companies to travel with, look for those with official accreditation from EarthCheck or Green Globe. These companies have met exceptional standards of practice in terms of their impact on the environment. You can also look for companies certified by B Corp, which means they have been assessed on their commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
